Firecracker Eye Injuries on Diwali – Essential Eye Safety Tips

By Dr. Puneet Gupta, Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon, Sharnam Eye Centre, Ghaziabad

Common Injuries:

• Corneal burns or abrasions from sparks or blast pressure
• Foreign bodies or gun-powder particles in the eye
• Lid burns and singed eyelashes
• Hyphema (bleeding inside eye)
• Traumatic cataract or retinal detachment in severe cases

Immediate First Aid:

• Do NOT rub the eye.
• Do NOT rinse with unclean water or apply ointments at home.
• Shield the eye with a clean cloth or cup without pressure.
• Seek emergency ophthalmic care immediately — even if pain seems mild.

Prevention Tips:

• Maintain safe distance from crackers, especially rockets and bombs.
• Avoid lighting crackers in crowded or windy places.
• Children should use only low-intensity sparklers under adult supervision.
• Use protective glasses if handling fireworks.
• Never attempt to re-light dud crackers.

Message:

“A moment of carelessness can cause lifetime blindness.
Celebrate Diwali with lights — not sights of injury.”
