ICMR Guidelines for Diabetic Patients

ICMR: Eye Screening is Necessary for 5 Year Old Diabetic Patients | Central Government Issued Directive

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the central government have implemented a commendable initiative to screen for diabetic retinopathy in patients who have had diabetes for more than five years. This program aims to prevent blindness associated with diabetes, a leading cause of preventable blindness in adults.

At Sharnam Eye Centre, we’ve taken this mission to the next level by offering doorstep diabetic retinopathy screening services. With the Sharnam Mobile Retina Eye Clinic, we’re bringing advanced digital imaging technology directly to patients. This innovative approach allows for immediate retina imaging and provides patients with a report on their retina’s condition concerning diabetes-related changes.

Since the inception of our program, we’ve screened over 6,000 diabetic patients. Our initiative not only contributes to the early detection and prevention of vision loss but also raises awareness about the importance of regular eye check-ups for diabetic individuals.

We believe that with continued efforts and community engagement, we can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes-related blindness and improve the quality of life for countless individuals.

FAQ on Diabetic Retinopathy

Top 10 FAQ for Diabetic Retinopathy – Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy

Top 10 FAQ for Diabetic Retinopathy – Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy: Symptoms, Risks, and Treatments – A Comprehensive Guide

1. What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a diabetes complication that affects the eyes. It’s caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina).

2. What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Eventually, it can cause blindness. Symptoms may include spots or dark strings floating in your vision (floaters), blurred vision, fluctuating vision, dark or empty areas in your vision, and vision loss.

3. Who is at risk for diabetic retinopathy?

Anyone with type 1 or type 2 diabetes can develop this condition, especially if they have had diabetes for a long time, have poorly controlled blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or are pregnant.

4. How is diabetic retinopathy diagnosed?

It’s diagnosed during an eye examination that includes visual acuity testing, dilating the eyes to examine the retina and optic nerve, and possibly fluorescein angiography or optical coherence tomography (OCT).

5. Can diabetic retinopathy be prevented?

Managing your diabetes is the best way to lower your risk. This includes controlling your blood sugar level, blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with regular diabetes and eye check-ups.

6. What are the treatments for diabetic retinopathy?

Treatment, which can’t cure diabetic retinopathy, often slows or stops the progression of the condition. Treatments may include laser treatment, injection of corticosteroids or anti-VEGF medication into the eye, and vitrectomy surgery.

7. Is laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy painful?

Most patients experience little to no discomfort during laser treatment. You may feel a sharp prick or a sensation of pressure in the eye. The eye is usually numbed before treatment.

8. What are the side effects of treatments for diabetic retinopathy?

Side effects can include bleeding in the eye, increased pressure in the eye, pain or discomfort in the eye, and temporary or permanent loss of vision.

9. How often should someone with diabetes get an eye exam?

If you have diabetes, it’s recommended to have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year. More frequent medical eye exams may be necessary if you have diabetic retinopathy or if your eye doctor advises it.

10. Can vision loss from diabetic retinopathy be reversed?

Unfortunately, loss of vision from diabetic retinopathy is often irreversible. However, early detection and treatment can significantly reduce the risk of blindness and can sometimes restore vision that has been lost.

All About Diabetic Retinopathy and Your Eyesight

Diabetic Retinopathy and Your Eyesight – A Simple Guide to Know and Deal with the Issue!

If you find out you have diabetic retinopathy, it can be scary. You might be worried about losing your sight or how to treat it. The good news is that knowing about it and seeing your doctor can help avoid big problems.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy happens when high sugar levels hurt the back part of your eye, called the retina. Some people don’t know they have it because one eye might help the other see better.

Why Eye Check-ups Matter:

Seeing your Retina eye doctor often is super important. Dr. Puneet Gupta, an Retina expert, says that if you catch it early, you can stop a lot of the damage. If you’ve had diabetes for a long time, you should see your Retina specialist /eye doctor more often. And if you notice things like floaty spots, blurry vision, or colors looking faded, call your eye doctor right away.

Can You Get Better If You Lose Sight?

If you take good care of your health—like watching your sugar levels, eating right, not smoking, and taking your medicine—you might get some of your sight back. This is not only good for your eyes but also for your whole body.

How Does It Hurt Your Eyes?

The damage can be different for everyone. At first, tiny blood vessels in your eye might leak or get puffy. Later on, weak new blood vessels can grow and bleed inside the eye. In the worst cases, these blood vessels make scars that can pull the retina away from the eye.

Treatments Today:

There are good treatments nowadays for diabetic retinopathy. Some people might get medicine shots / injections in the eye or laser treatments. Some might need a surgery called vitrectomy. If the idea of a injection in your eye scares you, don’t worry. It’s usually fast and doesn’t hurt much.

Life with Less Sight:

If you do lose some sight, you can still have a good life. There are tools like magnifying glasses, talking devices, and apps to help .

To sum it up, having diabetic retinopathy is serious, but with the right care and early action, you can handle it. Always remember to see your Retina specialist or eye doctor, ask questions, and get the help you need.

Early Detection of Diabetic Retinal Changes

Why is Early Detection of Diabetic Retinal Changes Necessary?

Diabetics have an amplified risk of developing eye problems which, if left untreated, can result in deprived vision and sightlessness. However, 98% of serious vision damage from diabetes can be halted with regular eye examinations and timely treatment.

How Does Diabetes Affect Your Eyes?

High blood glucose levels can cause variations in the contour of the lens which can distort your vision. This can occur before diabetes is detected or isn’t being treated. The distortion generally vanishes when blood glucose levels are reduced via suitable treatment. Therefore, getting new spectacles should be postponed until blood glucose levels are back within the suggested range. High blood glucose levels for lengthy periods of time can increase the risk of more serious eye difficulties in individuals with diabetes, including:

✔ Diabetic Retinopathy

✔ Macular edema

✔ Glaucoma

✔ Cataracts

Most diabetics undervalue the fact that diabetes can influence eyesight because they do not observe changes in their vision until the situation is very dire. Few diabetic patients get the luxury of initial cautionary signs. Often, the damage to the eye is done before the presentation of any symptoms. Hence, it is necessary to have regular eye check-ups so that complications can be detected early and treated quickly.

Why is early detection of diabetic retinal changes necessary?

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading reasons of avoidable blindness in working-aged adults. Risk elements for visually substantial diabetic retinopathy consist of duration of disease, poor glycemic control, and hypertension.

The American Diabetes Association suggests preliminary eye examinations for patients with diabetes as follows:

● For Type 1 Diabetes- first dilated exam within 5 years of beginning of diabetes;

● For Type 2 Diabetes- first dilated exam at time of analysis; and

● For pregnant people with diabetes- a screening checkup before or during the first trimester.

Regrettably, studies show that the rate of diabetic eye exams continues to be low. Timely detection of diabetic retinopathy is imperative for quick treatment and optimum visual outcomes. In the case of subclinical diabetic retinopathy, neural retinal damage and microvascular changes might occur but be asymptomatic to patients. At the point of noticeable funduscopic diabetic variations, microvascular changes might have already resulted in irreparable structural impairment.

Improvements in imaging technology have provided ophthalmologists with adjunctive analytical tools to better assess for the manifestation and degree of diabetic retinopathy. Simple color fundus photography is important in emphasizing discoveries that might have been overlooked on slit lamp or incidental ophthalmoscopy examination. Non-invasive optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a very useful diagnostic tool to know what is happening in the layers of the retina of diabetic patients.

Diabetic retinopathy is a very serious impediment resulting from diabetes. Virtually all diabetic patients will show some retinal vicissitudes at some point in their lives. It is presently suggested that type 1 diabetics begin yearly eye exams 3-5 years post diagnosis. Patients with type 2 diabetes should have annual eye exams beginning the same year as their analysis. Well-timed diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is necessary as the significance of early treatment has become progressively obvious. Remember, your sight is very valuable. Take the time out for a comprehensive annual eye exam to make sure that you preserve this valuable resource for many years to come.
