PDT is a proven treatment for wet macular degeneration located under central fovea (Sub Foveal Choroidal Neovascularization) . Studies and experience have shown that this treatment approach, using the combination of photosensitizing dye and a low power laser, results in better vision than no treatment. it reduces the amount of vision loss from subfoveal choroidal neovascularization predominantly Classic (Clearly Visible Subfoveal Choroidal Neovascularization – 50 percent or greater classic component on fluorescein angiography).

Photodynamic therapy is a two – step procedure. First, a medication (Photosensitizer dye VISUDYNE) is infused in the vein. Then a very low-power non heating laser light is directed at the abnormal blood vessels. The laser light activates the medication, which leads to damage and closure of the abnormal blood vessels. The overlying retina is rarely damaged by this treatment. Most patients require multiple treatments to achieve stable results.

Other option for such situation is Intravitreal injections of Anti VEGF compounds like Lucentis and Avastin.
