Retina is a thin transparent layer of light sensitive nervefibres and cells.It covers the inside wall of the eye and works like the film in the camera.
Retinal Detachment
Retinal Detachment is a serious eye problem that can occur at any age but it is more likely to ocur in patients who are Near sighted/Myopes.If not treated early retinal detachment may lead to permanent loss of vision.
Symptoms
Initially the patient may notice floaters and flashes of light in the vision, further development of the retinal detachment will cause dark shadow in part of the side vision and later will lead to blurring of central vision also.
Scleral Buckling or Vitreous Surgery
Once the Retinal detachment has occurred the treatment is surgery. Scleral Buckling or Vitreous Surgery may be required as per the need.
Surgery performed under local or general anesthesia.
Depending on the patients health and the time needed for the surgery these operations may be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Over 90% of retinal detachment can be reattached by these modern surgical techniques if treated on time. Ocasionally more than one surgery may be required.
